news. it is bad news on the domestic side and on the pentagon side. and it's not to be taken lightly on the domestic side. every single program that people count on is going to be cut across the board, 13%. >> that's social security. >> that's medicare. >> that's medicaid. >> that's headstart. >> that's -- it's -- it is so bad that the congressional budget office said: this sequester will take us not right away but probably by the end of the year from recovery into recession. back into recession. so this thing, here you go, you do this. the economy is going to tank. i was in the briefing room friday at the whitehouse when secretary ray lahood came in secretary of transportation, ray lahood, talking about just one other aspect of that, of the sequester that we can expect and that is in air travel. the secretary mentioned they have no flexibility in this. they have to cut so much and the only wake they can cut with so many employees they've got is to make -- is to require some of them to take a furlough. most of their employees are air traffic controllers.

at the pentagon, chuck hagel, and then john brennan, his pick for the cia. obviously the benghazi matter is an obstacle for chuck hagel's confirmation and vote there in congress and then this john brennan matter is very important to the issue of these targeted drone strikes, rand paul, the senator from kentucky has said that he is willing to hold up that vote on john brennan. if he doesn't receive assurances from the white house that the united states will not target any drone strikes on americans on american soil. so some of this information i think the administration is hoping will at least for now satisfy some of those members with these concerns, wolf. >> it's going to be a tough battle, i take it. both of these confirmations likely to go through next week. but it's by no means a done deal, is it? >> reporter: it's not a -- especially when you have senators saying they may hold up nominees and so we're going to have to wait and see whether or not senator paul is satisfied with the information that he's getting from the white house. but this is perhaps, you know, a break in an impasse

as sequestration take effect at the beginning of march. the pentagon has to reduce spending by $46 billion in the remaining seven months of fiscal year 2013. >> if these cuts happen there will be a serious disruption in defense programs and a sharp decline in our military readiness. >> reporter: this army document says three-fourths of its combat brigades will have to delay their training for several months resulting in a failure to meet demands of the national military strategy by the end of this year. afraid it will have to take $18 billion out of its own budget the army has already stopped maintenance of 1,300 vehicles and 17,000 weapons. according to this document the air force would cut its overhauls of aircraft by one-third, with the result that some planes would have to be grounded. flying hours for air force pilots would be cut by 18%. >> it puts at risk our fundamental mission of protecting the american people. >> reporter: combat operations in afghanistan would not be affected by the cuts but the pull-out of $20 billion worth of equipment could be delaye
